Hi. I’m seeing a lot of “You can’t ship that!” across my dash today. So let me start this politely:
Stop that.
I don’t care what orientation or gender is expressed in the canon. Fanfiction and fanart is specifically created as a change from the canon. Given the very nature of human beings, every single creator out there is probably going to have a wildly different vision in their head.
It is not your right to decide their vision for their transformative works are wrong.
It is your right to ignore their vision. The internet comes equipped with back buttons and if you don’’t have Xkit or Tumblr Savior by now, neighbors, it is past time.
“But their gender/orientation is marginalized and reflects me! I am protecting myself!”
No.
You’re being a jerk. Look, I get it. I’m a trans guy and it pisses me off every time I see a male character turned into a female. It’s far too close to home, but you know what I don’t do? Give that person grief about something that gives them a bit of joy. I can hit Block Post with Xkit to literally never see it again! Ever. And if that’s all this person posts? I have a mutual that loves it? I can add the originator’s url to my banned word list with Xkit. Problem solved.
Share a computer and can’t install? Then be mature enough to scroll past or don’t use this site at all. Use mobile? Exit the site until you can be the computer that has protections installed.
And if it truly bothers you and you just can’t let it go? Go out and make content you prefer and enjoy! Channel it into something productive! It’s much, much more satisfying than policing the fun of others. I promise.
