Author Appreciation Week

After seeing how successful Love Your Artist week was, and all the love that went around there, I thought it might be nice to keep some of that going, and do something cool, specifically for fic authors.

Fan fiction authors give so much to fandoms, whether they post fics once a day or once every couple of months. It takes a lot of effort and guts to not only write pieces, but to share them with the internet, however, they do often go under appreciated.

Fic writers typically don’t ask for commissions like other artists do and put the same amount of effort into their work for completely free, their writing gets far less notes than a piece of fan art would, and they don’t get the same exposure or even personal feedback. Of course, artists of all types are extremely talented and fantastic, but there is definitely an imbalance.

For the week of Monday July 13th – Sunday July 19th, we should try to take part in a week that will give authors a chance to hear from their readers and fans!

And here’s a few ways to do that:

  • Each day, pick a fic writer or two, and send them a message. Let them know what you love about their writing, what your favorite piece is etc. Something nice and personal that will let them know their stories have power.
  • Reblog fics instead of liking them. More people will see them, more people will read them, and the author can get a wider range of feedback on their writing.
  • Create Fic Recommendation posts, where you share your favorite fics and WHY you love them!

Let’s let the writers of fandoms know that their work is so, so appreciated and help them to improve their craft! A simple message could be a writer’s reason to keep working, and to remember why they love sharing their stories in the first place!

Spread the word and positivity!

oh my god I am all over this idea

::marks on calendar:: Off to prepare a recommendation post! And start messaging random amazing authors to tell them how awesome they are! 🙂

a 90’s kid? don’t you mean sad adult?

70,000 people have reblogged this but no one is trying to defend themselves

There is nothing to defend

#i read a post once that described 90s kids as the generation of nostalgia #because so much technological advancement happened in such a rapid timeframe when we were growing up #that we can clearly remember having technologies that are now obsolete #like going from a corded hugeass phone to a small computer in your pocket just within our formative years is a major thing #and it sparks a nostalgia for our seemly ‘simpler’ childhoods #because so much rapid development makes it seem like it was a lot longer ago than it actually was (x)

This is the most solid explanation of our decade I have ever heard.

Oh my god

Just to add onto that, our childhood wasn’t even technology based. We grew up knowing of chalk, skateboards, jump rope, street hockey, playgrounds, butterfly collecting, etc. Slowly technology took over our lives and now there are hardly kids playing outside in the summer. We can clearly remember our childhood as it was and now we can see the clear line between it. We were the generation right smack in the middle of it all. Our parents were of non-tech and our children/young siblings will be all tech.

Not to mention, ours was the last generation that grew up with all those bright promises of “work hard, go to college, and you’ll have a successful life,” only to find those hopes abruptly dashed when the housing bubble burst. Milliennials have grown up expecting that disappointment, because for them, the problem has been there since Day One.

So 90s kids aren’t just nostalgic…we’re BITTER. And we ache for those days when we could still think that the world was boundless and full of the opportunities we were promised since the first day of kindergarten.

Every time someone adds to this i have too reblog.

Is this even a real thing or am I just getting spam now. If FF DOES remove all M-style fics and Yaoi and what not they are legit destroying themselves.

Ill post “Sex doesn’t” on Archive and that will be the only Non tf fic I will ever post on there because I actually worked hard on that one.

I mean Im never posting on FF again anyway but I still do like to protect what is on there.

can anyone confirm this

They do this now & then, so if it’s really happening again, I’m not surprised.  The last time I’m aware of them doing it, AO3 all but crashed and had to add new servers to handle the influx of new members as people fled the sinking ship of ffnet.

This started like a decade ago, there was a huge policy change where they took away the NC-17 rating (you used to be able to apply it to fics). Users were all alerted and then the NC-17 rated stories were all deleted a few months later. Everything since then has just been sporadic enforcement of fics that should have NC-17 rating. That started a huge migration to LiveJournal, iirc.

On Content

warlordenfilade:

I believe in people taking responsibility for their own comfort and happiness.

I tag ships, I tag content that many people find disturbing, I tag posts that are NSFW, and if you’re my friend and have a less common phobia or trigger, I will tag it for you.

This gives people the tools they need to decide if they are okay to see something, if they might want to see it once they’ve prepared themselves or entered the right mood for it, or if they never want to see the thing.

I am not offended if people choose not to look at certain posts or certain fics because they’re concerned about their ability to handle the content, because they don’t like a ship, because they just don’t feel like it.  I am not offended by people setting and enforcing their own boundaries.

I am offended by people being harmed by being silenced.  I am offended by people forcing their boundaries onto others (which is different from my free choice to, for example, not discuss spiders with my arachnophobic friends.  I can still discuss spiders with everyone else, and I do.  I’m just not going to discuss them with the people who are upset by them.  I am not going to accept that I should never discuss spiders, ever, because someone who’s arachnophobic might overhear me.)

I don’t censor the stories I’m trying to tell.  I think it’s actively harmful to make some subjects So Terrible They Are Unspeakable.  It prevents people from examining and exploring and understanding ideas in a venue that doesn’t involve real people in the experience.  It shuts down dialogue, and in the silence, falsehoods and ignorance breed.  It gives power to Shameful Secrets.  It removes people’s ability to seek their own catharsis in the safe venue of make believe.

I tag to give the reader the power to read now, read later, or not read, as they choose.  I have to trust that readers will take responsibility and make wise choices.  If some people are not legally able to take responsibility, I have to trust that their caregivers are taking responsibility.  This blog is an adult space, like a casino, and is marked as such.  Nobody is shutting down lotteries because children shouldn’t gamble.

I don’t tag everything, because for every thing that exists, there’s probably someone with a phobia of it.  I can’t be responsible for every passing mention of, well, everything.

I also don’t tag the main contents of this blog. If you’re upset by robots, non-heterosexual couples, the existence of militaries, or my charming personality, just unfollow me.

I’m not offended by people unfollowing because they don’t like my content, don’t like my personality, are just bored with Transformers, whatever.  My follow list has no relation to my self esteem, so if you’re no longer interested, it’s okay to leave.

This blog is where I celebrate my fandom.  It’s where I post things that are important and meaningful to me.  I share these things in the hopes other people may also enjoy them, but even if absolutely no other person does, I have, so they’ve served their purpose.

My new art project calls for 115,000 all seeing eyes, cut individually with a razor blade, from one dollar bills. Three years later, I am almost done.

you ruined more than $100,000 for a fucking art project?

Can’t he go to jail for doing that

i am appalled

Wtf

If just the eye was cut out, very precisely, the bill would still be spendable most places. Damaged currency does go around, when it gets to a bank they remove it from circulation. Kind of neat to think how many bills we actually come into contact with.

The High Cost of Acting Happy

http://anniemurphypaul.com/2014/02/the-high-cost-of-acting-happy/

“Surface acting is when front line service employees, the ones who interact directly with customers, have to appear cheerful and happy even when they’re not feeling it. This kind of faking is hard work—sociologists call it “emotional labor”—and research shows that it’s often experienced as stressful. It’s psychologically and even physically draining; it can lead to lowered motivation and engagement with work, and ultimately to job burnout.”

RELEVANT.
